A L'INFOLETTRE
The marae is the most fascinating place in Māori culture. There are over a thousand of them, the vast majority on the North Island, where 90% of Māori live. The marae is central to the traditions of a tribe with ancestral ties. Situated on collective land, this complex of buildings is organized mainly around the meeting place: the wharenui. Its structure roughly follows the human body, and it generally symbolizes an important ancestor.
This is where communities celebrate births, honour funerals, create educational workshops or present tribal events. However, unless you are officially welcomed at a Pōwhiri Ceremony, visitors are not permitted to enter the marae’s sacred precincts.
