    EXPLORE

On a wooden dock, crowds await the departure of the next cruise as a boat heads away towards the mountains.
Milford Sound Fjord can be explored by boat, plane and helicopter. The more athletic prefer hiking, sea kayaking and diving. All in all, there are plenty of options to explore one of the country’s most visited sites.

Fiordland National Park | Cruise at Milford Sound

After kilometres of lush forest and snow-capped mountains, we reach the end of Highway 94, where a dozen buses are waiting. Many tour groups cover 600 km in a single day from Queenstown. Most of the tourists explore the country’s largest national park in just 12 hours…

As we plan to camp for three nights in the park, we prefer the last cruise of the day, which is less crowded. At 4:30 p.m., our boat heads for the emblematic Mitre Peak, culminating at 1,692 m above these deep waters.

After half an hour cruising Milford Fjord, our boat gently approaches a rocky point. “Look, Mommy!” exclaims Léo. Of course, like everyone else, I’m amazed by the twenty or so fur seals, but even more so by the Stirling waterfall on the far shore. What a stunning contrast, the frenetic, white water and those verdant, vertical cliffs!

Fur seals sleep on a rocky terrace at the water’s edge. In the distance, a high waterfall cascades down from verdant cliffs.
With over 7 metres of rainfall every year, this is one of the wettest regions in New Zealand. These fur seals certainly do not complain.

A small boat cruises peacefully surrounded by impressive green cliffs.
Milford Sound narrows dramatically at its mouth, while in other places it is more than two kilometres wide.

Milford Sound is not the only fjord in the park. In fact, 14 fjords can be found in this paradise. Fiordland National Park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List – Te Wahipounamu – South West New Zealand
